Hello folks,
I am pretty sure it waz discussed before, but can a
helping soul tell me how to get sound and/or music
out of this game on my GUSMAX? I tried SBOS, MAXSBOS,
MEGAEM with no luck at all.
BTW, thanx for the guy who told us the location of
the Warcraft GUS patch, it worx GREAT!!!!!

Even if this were technical feasible (which I believe it might be), I
can virtually guarantee you that it will be unsatisfactory at
best. The kind of "SCSI connector" that comes on a soundcard is just
good enough to service a CD-ROM drive, which tops out at say 450k/sec
for a triple-speed drive. Hook up a reasonable (4M/sec? I'm not even
sure, but around there) hard drive to it and you'll be seriously
bottlenecking it.
On the other hand, that daughtercard is still a reasonable option for
just hooking up a CD-ROM drive. SCSI CD-ROMs tend to be slightly more
expensive, but then again you could conceivably use them elsewhere as
well. If you got that card and an external SCSI CD-ROM drive, for
instance, you could probably move the same drive between multiple
computers and other equipment. Whether this is useful to you or not I
cannot say, of course.
I know nothing about the daughtercard existences or usefulness (I have
a GUS MAX which came with three types of CD-ROM connector, one of
which I'm using with a Panasonic drive that was packaged up by
Reveal), so I will wish you good luck in your purchases..

Congratulations all!
Your overwhelming response to LucasArts about putting GUS support in
Dark Forces seems to have had a lasting effect on LucasArts, as
evidenced by the "form letter" they sent to all who wrote them
regarding the GUS. Evidently enough people wrote to make them
notice!!!
Good job to the many people who wrote and hopefully helped clinch
LucasArts' support of the best damn sound card inovation since the
original AdLib....

Subject: Dark Forces / Win9x
Does anyone know where I can get a copy of the demo for Dark Forces? I have
tried Babbage's, Software Plus, and Electronics Boutique. Is it anywhere on the
internet, or is it CD-ROM and huge?
Anyone out there using Linux Slackware Professional 2.1.1 (Fall 94 release) and
the GUS and could give me some help setting it up?
Also, anyone know where to get a copy of Win9x beta? I would like to try to
test it and get the GUS to work.
And lastly, it seems we've gotten LucasArts attention. They are sending
"form-email" to everyone, so the mail must have gotten kinda heavy.
For everyone who wants to know, the Descent game on epas is not corrupted, and
the files DSCENT-1 and DSCENT-2 are version 1.1 and work fine on my GUS. The
game is awesome!

Subject: Dark Forces Demo works with GUS?
I had downloaded the DF demo, but was never able to get it to work with
the GUS. How did you (whoever managed this feat) do this?
Since I found this game unable to work on my system, I deleted it,
unfortunately. If anyone can direct me to an FTP site with this game (and
with the demo version of Tie Fighter- I saw a floppy disk at a computer
store and suspect it must be out there _somewhere_) and instructions on
getting it working with the GUS, i'd appreciate it.
And my last request is this. I might be able to get a SB-16 card with CD
rom package for a very good price. Has anyone used a SB16 and Gus card
simultaneously, with CD Rom installed, and run os/2? I ask because I'm
curious about how the IRQs should be set, esp in OS/2 so that the printer
port (I'm printerless _now_ but I'd rather avoid future troubles) IRQ of
7 isn't used by either card, and that I dont have a problem with the SB
or the GUS. Perhaps I should uninstall the GUS driver in OS/2 and use
only the soundblaster in os/2? Again, any suggestions or help would be
much appreciated.

Excuse me - but isn't Win95 supposed to have crash-protection and full
HW-control etc. etc.?? How on earth are the GUS drivers allowed to
work??? (Hey - of course it's nice they do - but...?)
If someone could explain this to me, then MAYBE I would be able to
understand it... :+)
This is maybe more Win95 than GUS related, but I find it interesting because
we who use OS/2 just have Alpha drivers (and no Win-OS/2 drivers) for the same
reason I thought Win95 would have problems too.
BTW: Nice to see how many got "personal replies" from LucasArts... :)

Most games and programs handles the less memory quite well.

WHAT ??? Dont do the SB emulation. Do your own sound system. They are doing

Use UltrMid if you have to have patch caching. And why use almost 9MB of
XMS memory who most people dont have on patches that are not needed. The
new software builds a list of used patches for each games and then loads
them the next time. quite nice i would think.

I is more famous then the SB, there was almost a riot a few year ago. The most
people thought we were infecting the news-groups and we had to have ower

GUS software version 3.56 have a known incompatibility problem
with PCTOOLS or Norton's shell for Windows. Simply upgrade (or
downgrade) your version of software and the problem should go away. Or
you could start up windows with Microsoft's version of PROGMAN.EXE (edit
the shell= line in SYSTEM.INI) and manually start the PCTOOLS Shell in
Program Manager.

Wrong. If you have a spare slot in the computer, the easiest and most
trouble-free way to do things is to buy the separate interface card with
the CD-ROM. It's also cheaper. We have this setup with a Panasonic drive
and it works just fine.

I've bought a Toshiba CD-ROM 3.4 spin and I'm wondering if it's

Can someone help me out on this one.

even if you have the daughtercard you still have to mess with
drivers, the point of getting a daughtercard is just to save you a
slot, that's it. IMO, getting a separate card is better.
> daughtercard sounds very interesting if I could later get SCSI hard drives
to what i've learned, SCSI on a soundcard is too slow to drive a hd,
it's only enough to drive a cd-rom; moreover, you'll encounter less

I'm not a big shooter when it comes to the GUS, but I think that a
question needs to be raised about the future GUS/AMD Interwave:
What do we, the consumers, want to see in the amount of base RAM that
will be shipped as standard on the next "GUS"?
I mean, I'm trying to tinker with the GUS programmically. Because the
silly original GUS came loaded with only 256K, I have to cater to the
lowest common denominator when writing software -- this cramps my brain.
I would like to organize some sort of informal poll among folks on this
list. If you would like to have some say, please mail me with the amount
of RAM you would like to see shipped as standard on every new GUS. This
might make design and cost issues inside Gravis easier if we let them know
how we feel now. Anyhow, I'm assuming that the next GUS will be able to
use SIMM modules instead of DRAMs, so you'll probably need to base your
vote on available SIMM module sizes out there... My address is
davew@uofport.edu
Mail me before February 29. I will tally your votes and post them to the
GUS general mail server on the next day. I will repost this a few times so
everyone gets a look at it. PLEASE DO NOT POST A VOTE TO THE MAIL

Subject: OS/2 and Win31 and GUS
Again Y'all,
Gravis messed up when they wrote the Win31 drivers. They are VxD's which
allows direct hardware access. This also compromises whatever stability a
version of Windows might posess...
Anyhow, as an OS who cares about not crashing every other day, OS/2 won't
allow these drivers to load. This is about the only Win31 item not
compatable with OS/2.
So, either find OS/2 native versions of your apps and utils, or unload the
drivers. It's also possible to make a batch file that swaps *.ini files
depending if you are in DOS or OS/2.
On another note:
Even though the response fom Lucas Arts was canned (i got the EXACT thing
too), hopefully the volume of mail sent will convince them to make that "we
hope" to "we will".

Hi everybody ,
I am getting really disppointed of how gravis is managing the ultrasound.
You send the card and you dont get anything for two years.
Everytime a new release of the install-disks is out there is ALWAYS something
not working ( now for the 3.59 for example its just clear they even didnt try
to install it on a single machine and see if the gus was functioning).
They announce something ( read Megaem protected mode ) and after 2 months
none has seen even the beta.
We just cannot let everything go this shameful way.
If the situations keeps this way i am going to sell this card.
Alessio.
P.S. : yuck! when i wrote the subject i thought i would have not be so
polemicus but while writing i got much angry! :) Bye

however, I get music perfectly, but no sound effects.
I even tried using SBOS (E.exe file and Soundblaster selection) but game
could not find the SB.
Any ideas??

Subject: Tie Fighter Drift Problem
Anyone else noticed that when the digital sound effects are turned on in
Tie Fighter, a joystick plugged into the GUS will cause huge amounts of
drift. And it's a drift to the bottom left too, very annoying.
This joystick is absolutely rock solid in XWing, but Tie Fighter is
virtually unplayable with the digital FX on, with both SBOS and Megaem.
Sigh.
Anyone got any ideas how to fix this, short of turning off the sound?
Michael

Subject: Will Gravis ever really support General Midi??
A couple months ago I wrote gravis and asked them if they would ever
really support General Midi. (MegaEM works with almost nothing these
days... expanded memory? humpf) I got a snotty response from one of
their techs saying "a super version of MegaEM is in the works".
A couple issues:
1. Hopefully it won't require expanded memory.
2. It better work with protected mode.
3. it will be nice if SB emulation is provided simutaneously.
4. I hope MaxBos isn't what the tech was talking about. (no GM)
I really like my GUS MAX, but I would sure like it if it DID support
General Midi like it says on the box (emblazed on the box actually).
Maybe this is hoping for too much. I just purchased a Tropez card
and have almost everything the GUS does, plus General Midi, plus
better than Sound Blaster Pro emulation (no drivers), plus I can put up to 12
megs on it, and I paid less.
Does anyone have the scoop? Or has Gravis given up on us GF1 folks?
